Periodontics
The amount of bacteria present in the mouth is huge, Most of them are harmless, but good dental hygiene is vital to keep their colonies in the right balanced proportion. Gums have a great absorption capacity and plaque is not exempt. Food debris accumulation and decomposition in interdental spaces generate what is known as tartar: a hard layer where teeth meet the gums. That makes them swell and bleed, and leads to gingivitis. If detected on time it can be controlled and avoid it becoming gum-reducing periodontitis. But allowing its progression may let it reach the alveolar bone and slowly destroy it, causing tooth loss.
Preventing, diagnosing and treating these sorts of diseases is what periodontics is about. Its most frequent treatment is curettage, consisting in scraping teeth under the gums to remove calculus and clean the surface.
Periodontal disease is chronic and makes it necessary for the patient to have frequent control visits to the dentist. The visit frequency is, of course, relative. It depends on how deteriorated the bone is, the patient’s habits, and other objective factors like age or risk factors.
